A YOUNG Unley business owner has scooped first prize in the Adelaide* magazine’s cover design competition.

Ashley Playfair, 28, was beside herself when she heard the news. The competition was launched in the lead-up to the magazine’s annual June Youth Issue. Locals aged 30 and under were asked to submit work portraying Adelaide through their eyes.

Ms Playfair’s entry is a unique representation of the city’s CBD created using beads and wire.

It has been a big week for Ms Playfair, whose Unley Road bead store Ladybeads was one of four finalists in The Messenger Local Business Awards – City and Eastern Region’s Specialty Retail category.

Beads were always Ms Playfair’s passion but six months ago she also made them her livelihood. Ladybeads’ doors opened on 4 November 2011, the culmination of year’s worth of “managing other people’s businesses”.

“My grandma taught me how to make jewellery,” said Ms Playfair, who went to Unley High School, studied at Burnside’s Ruth Tuck Art School on weekends and completed a Visual Arts degree at Adelaide College of the Arts.

The cover was unveiled last night and the top 26 entries are currently on display outside The Advertiser building, 31 Waymouth St.
